Developer hopes for third time lucky with £35m plan

Edinburgh Evening News

A £35 million masterplan to transform one of Edinburgh's biggest eyesores is to be submitted to council chiefs within weeks. The new owners of the old Lothian Buses depot in Shrub Place hope to build more than 300 homes and create two public squares and a tree-lined avenue. It is the third time a bid has been made to revitalise the controversial site, which is seen by residents as a major blight on Leith Walk. It is hoped the latest proposals by Edinburgh-based BL Developments will prove to be third time lucky after the plans received the backing of heritage chiefs. The company, which carried out a major consultation exercise on its plans with the council, interest groups and residents, says it will submit its proposals for the brownfield site by the end of this month. The company hopes to get planning approval by the end of the year and aims to start work on the site by next spring.
