Are we learning to love the high life?

The Sunday Herald

Forget the rather infrequent bus services or the apparently random rubbish collections – the single greatest conundrum facing modern city dwellers, it seems, is what to make of the high-rise tower block. To say we have a love/hate relationship with these concrete monoliths is an understatement. To some, they will always conjure up images of Nelson Mandela House, the fictional London council tower block that housed Del Boy and Rodney in Only Fools And Horses. For these detractors, the world of the high-rise is one in which the lifts never work, the roofs leak and undesirables lurk in graffiti-daubed corridors.
