Mansion set for a £5m rebirth

Edinburgh Evening News

A £5 million scheme to return an 18th century mansion to its former glory has been given the green light by planning chiefs. A fire gutted the historic Penicuik House more than 100 years ago and the building has lain in ruins ever since. Now the trust which took possession of the house 25 years ago is finally set to begin preliminary work to make the roofless structure safe after receiving permission from Midlothian Council. The A-listed building in Penicuik was created between 1761 and 1769 in a Classical style pioneered by renowned Italian architect Andrea Palladio.
