Record £17m of lottery cash for museum

The Herald

The biggest lottery grant in Scotland, worth nearly £17m, was yesterday pledged to the National Museums of Scotland to transform its most famous building into a museum "fit for the twenty-first century". The Royal Museum in Chambers Street, Edinburgh, is the focus of a £44.5m re-development project which will double the number of objects on display, open new street-level doors and provide new exhibition space. The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) yesterday outlined details of a "stage one" £16.8m grant, the biggest capital grant of its kind in Scotland, and gave the national museums a further £1m in development funds.
