Dixon Street Scheme
Two landmark tower blocks which will dramatically change the view from Scotland's busiest shopping street have been given the go-ahead. A neighbouring, gold-coloured, high-rise block has also been approved. The three developments on the banks of the Clyde, which together cost more than £220million, will link Glasgow city centre to the river. The largest of the new developments is the £200m Custom House Quay scheme - including a dramatic 24-storey narrow tower - by Clydeside Properties on the north bank of the river running between Glasgow and Victoria bridges. Beside it is the £12million "golden unicorn" building by Bristol-based developers Unicorn Tower which will be sited on Clyde Street. The final - and by far the most unusual - tower block to get the go-ahead is a £10m glass-fronted housing block on Dixon Street by Hamilton-based developers Dixon Street Partnership. The 150ft tall cigar-shaped building has been compared to the famous "gherkin" building in London designed by Sir Norman Foster.
