Charles Rennie Mackintosh's 100-year-old masterpiece, the Glasgow School of Art, was lined up for a £4.5 million facelift yesterday. But concerns were voiced for a second landmark building in the city by the celebrated architect and designer. The Heritage Lottery Fund has earmarked a £4,466,000 grant to return the interior of the Grade A-listed college to its former glory. Plans include removing a series of modern eyesores that spoil the building's original look - from ugly fire doors to fuse boxes and radiators. Offices will be reconverted to artists' studios, while a new visitor centre will aim to keep the balance between tens of thousands of tourists and the students for whom it is a working building. A new research centre will store and display the art school's collection of watercolours by Mackintosh and his contemporaries.
