The massive operation to transform the shoreline of Edinburgh and breathe new life into its communities is under way. Work has begun on the £1bn Waterfront Edinburgh development, which is thought to be one of the biggest urban regeneration projects in Europe. Three new hotels, an international-standard theatre complex, an architecture and design centre and a major new contemporary art gallery are all earmarked for the area of Granton. An upmarket shopping arcade and a number of other stores will also be created under the plan. Waterfront Edinburgh, a joint venture company which was set up by the council and Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh and Lothian, also envisages a network of canals and tree-lined walkways as well as several public squares on the 120-acre site over the next 10 years.
