Work on Glasgow's £20million 'squinty' bridge is today under way. The Finnieston Bridge will become the first new traffic link over the River Clyde for more than 30 years when it opens to traffic in September 2006. The bridge, dubbed 'squinty' because it cuts across the Clyde diagonally, will carry four lanes of traffic, linking Finnieston near the SECC on the north bank to the Pacific Quay site on the south side. It will also be built with the capability to cope with the addition of a light transport system, such as a tram, in the future. Although it will be a while before all the heavy machinery moves on site, essential surveying work was beginning this morning.
