The Lighthouse, Glasgow's architecture and design centre, is the most popular attraction of its kind in Europe. A new report reveals that more than one million people visited the centre in its first five years. The centre, in the Charles Rennie Mackintosh building in Mitchell Street, opened in 1999 in a blaze of publicity. In its early days it was accused of being too "arty" and failing to appeal to a wide enough audience. The Lighthouse, which cost £13m, needed hundreds of thousands of pounds of public cash to keep it afloat.
