New Chief Executive of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland

Mary Wrenn has been appointed the new Chief Executive of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS). Mary is currently Director of the Royal Society of Architects in Wales (RSAW), a position she has held since 1993. Through strong leadership, communication skills and personal enthusiasm, Mary is credited with transforming the Society from a modestly active RIBA region into a vibrant and effective national organisation with strong member support. Sebastian Tombs, current RIAS Chief Executive: Secretary & Treasurer leaves the RIAS on 20 May. He has been appointed Chief Executive of Architecture and Design Scotland.

Speaking shortly after the announcement of her appointment, Mary said: "It is a great honour to be given this opportunity to take forward the significant achievements of the RIAS at such an exciting moment in its history. Sebastian Tombs is leaving behind a tremendous legacy of achievement - and a steep learning curve for me! I am very much looking forward to living and working in Scotland".

Gordon Murray, RIAS President, commenting on the appointment, commented: "After a fruitful ten years with Sebastian Tombs at the helm of RIAS, the search for a new Chief Executive has provided an opportunity to not only enhance some of the initiatives underway in the Incorporation, but also to change emphasis in approach. It is important that we broaden our membership base, particularly among younger architects. In addition, we must reinforce our working relationships with complementary organisations. We believe Mary Wrenn is best placed to achieve those objectives and we are pleased to welcome her to RIAS as our new Chief Executive: Secretary & Treasurer."

In her current role she has driven the transformation of the profile of architecture and architects in Wales. She has established successful working relationships with the Welsh Assembly Government and the Design Commission for Wales as well as asserting the particular position of RSAW within the RIBA Network. Mary is an able commentator on matters relating to the profession and the b! uilt environment. The staff, Executive and Council of RIAS look forward to working with her".
