The Scotsman

When the architect, John Kinross, was commissioned to remodel Manderston, he asked his client, Sir James Miller, how much he could spend. "It simply doesn't matter," came the reply. Kinross took Sir James at his word. The final bill came to £222,000 in 1905 - the equivalent of around £100 million today. One does not have to look far to see where the money went. As the house at Duns, Berwickshire, prepares to host a series of events to celebrate its centenary, Manderston remains among the finest examples of Edwardian architecture.
