Placemaking is at the heart of the Scottish Executive's policy on architecture and urban design - it is about creating good quality places that are a pleasure to be in, that lift the spirits and challenge us to be more confident and self-assured. Architecture+DesignScotland (A+DS) is the new public body to champion placemaking in Scotland. We not only take over the role of the Royal Fine Art Commission for Scotland in commenting on major developments as they make their way through the planning system, but will also develop wider and more pro-active activities. We have been set up to encourage and support communities in thinking creatively about how better quality environments in their villages, towns and cities can be achieved. We want to encourage designers and developers to raise their game. Ministers have charged A+DS with inspiring excellence in the built environment, encouraging high quality public buildings and places, and stimulating and supporting a demand for better design by clients and for improved quality by the public.
