Island shelter is vying with Holyrood for design award

The Scotsman

A shelter on Tiree which cost £95,000 has been shortlisted alongside the £430 million Scottish Parliament building for Europe's leading architectural prize. Both are vying for the 2005 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - the Mies van der Rohe Award. They are among 33 shortlisted nominees chosen from 200 developments in 30 countries. The primary function of An Turas, on Tiree, adjacent to the ferry terminal, is a shelter from the weather. Described as "a fusion of art and architecture with the atmosphere of an 18th-century folly", it was designed by the Edinburgh company Sutherland Hussey. Charlie Hussey, a partner in the firm, said: "We are delighted and surprised. It is, to say the least, a somewhat more modest project than the parliament."
