Stirling is to undergo its most radical urban development in a generation with the £100 million transformation of its waterfront. The development, several years in the planning, will see the 40-acre former Ministry of Defence site at Forthside transformed into what could be described as a new city centre quarter for Stirling, providing much-needed commercial and residential provision. Stirling, awarded city status in 2002 in recognition of its rapid growth during the 1990s, has a current population of around 90,000 – Forthside's redevelopment will see this figure increase. Construction work on the development's first phase, an ambitious £35m housing project which will create 200 homes at the riverside northern end of the site, is scheduled to start in the autumn.
