It has been lauded as one of the finest buildings of its kind in Scotland. But since a devastating fire gutted historic Penicuik House more than 100 years ago, it has lain empty as a romantic ruin. Now an ambitious £5 million scheme has been launched to return the 18th century mansion to its former glory. The trust which took possession of the house 25 years ago is finally set to begin preliminary work to make the roofless structure safe. And its members are pursuing a cash boost from Historic Scotland and the Heritage Lottery Fund to bring the rest of their project to fruition. The A-listed building in Penicuik, Midlothian, was created between 1761 and 1769 in a Classical style pioneered by renowned Italian architect Andrea Palladio.
