'Pompous' gallery link draws architect's fire

Edinburgh Evening News

An underground link connecting two of Edinburgh's landmark galleries has been branded "pompous" by a former Scottish Parliament project architect.Adrian Welch criticised key aspects of the Weston Link at The Mound which, like the £431 million parliament, was built using the controversial construction management method. Last August's opening of the Weston Link, which houses a range of state-of-the-art visitor facilities, marked the completion of the galleries' five-year, £30m Playfair Project. The subterranean link between the National Gallery for Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy is one of the most striking features in the landscape looking west from the east end of Princes Street.
