A £2 million makeover will leave a city centre thoroughfare looking like "an airport runway", it was claimed today. New granite benches, stainless steel bollards and litter bins will adorn the revamped Castle Street from early next year under plans to turn it into a continental-style piazza. But the bid to bring a more cosmopolitan flavour to an area offering one of the most outstanding views of Edinburgh Castle today took a public pounding. Heritage watchdogs, local businesses, architectural experts and property agents have lined up to condemn the planned development, which is funded by the city council. The new look, revealed in a computer-generated image created by project architects Gillespies, has been branded "an airport runway" and "bland, bordering on the mediocre".
