Ninety-sixties architecture in Britain doesn't have the best reputation, and often deservedly so. In Edinburgh, I would happily demolish the St James Centre, the Jury's Inn or Argyle House, but please, let's leave the good examples of this period. The Scottish Provident Building by Rowand Anderson, Kininmonth & Paul is a wonderful addition to St Andrew Square and St David Street, turning the corner between two with ease, while respecting the existing building which it wraps around. The facade to St Andrew St is beautifully realised in granite, with a rhythm better than any other building of the era in Edinburgh.
