Capital plans a new New Town

The Scotsman

Plans to give Edinburgh its biggest extension since the 18th century and turn the capital into a major waterfront city were given the go-ahead yesterday. The 15-year facelift of Edinburgh's Leith docks will create up to 18,000 homes, flats and terraced houses. The development is the size of a small town and will also include offices, shops, leisure facilities and libraries. Councillors said it would be the largest extension of the city since the development of the New Town in Georgian times. The proposals for the 170-hectare site around the waterfront have been prepared by Forth Ports and Edinburgh Council, following consultation with the local community. Several schools are likely to be built, including a new secondary school.
