Red tape in danger of ruining heritage

Edinburgh Evening News

I've seen Scotland's best kept secret. It isn't the chemical composition of Irn-Bru or what the First Minister wears around Kirsty's Spanish pool. The nation's greatest hidden treasure is actually Taymouth Castle at Kenmore in Perthshire. Built by the Breadalbane family in the early 18th century, it is the most important Scottish castle still in private hands. Outside it appears a huge gothic pile but inside the public rooms are said to be dazzling examples of opulence. Queen Victoria visited and loved the interior of Taymouth but you can't see it. Due to modern safety regulations, the castle isn't open to the public. It also lies empty. The owners can't afford to live there due to the enormous heating and lighting bills.
