Elgin Place Church is a damaging loss

The Herald

To date over 200 Victorian churches have been demolished in Glasgow. A depressing figure for those who care about the city and its architectural heritage! So it is disappointing that this list has been extended with the addition of the Elgin Place Congregational Church. Such is the consistent quality and craftsmanship of what remains of our nineteenth and early twentieth-century townscape that Glasgow has been described as the best-preserved Victorian city in the world. However, the loss of this building has been damaging and if the city wants to retain this reputation it cannot afford to lose other buildings of this calibre. To be blunt, this legacy is an asset, and in the face of intense competition from other British and European cities there are good reasons why more must be done to support it.
