Demolition begins at burnt-out city clubs

The Herald

Demolition work got under way yesterday on an A-listed former church, destroyed in a huge fire last month. The Elgin Place Congregational Church in Glasgow city centre, which was home to the Shack and Trash nightclubs, was ordered to be demolished after experts declared it unsafe. Its Greek classical-style front was reduced to piles of rubble as excavators tore down the building's walls. The historic building had previously entertained 3500 clubbers every week, but was found to be unsafe on Christmas Eve after a gable wall collapsed. The demolition work is expected to be completed by the end of this week.
