Heritage watchdogs today hit out at the decline of Edinburgh's South Bridge and demanded a clean-up of the gateway into the city centre. The Cockburn Association and one of Edinburgh's leading conservation architects have called on property owners and city leaders to restore the "vandalised" South Bridge to its former glory. The street - the first urban viaduct of its kind in Europe - has suffered in recent years, with much of the recent attention focusing on the sliding fortunes of Princes Street. Once home to the prestigious Patrick Thomson's department store, Peter Allan's, Arnotts and Starks Outfitters, the main thoroughfare is now dominated by discount outlets and empty shop fronts.
