Little Venice comes to Scotland

The Sunday Herald

The sun will set on gleaming canal waters, panoramic views, and the jutting fin of a shark. This is not a tropical version of Venice, but a new £20 million development intended to revive the area of Port Dundas in Glasgow that has been a visionary's dream for almost a century. The architecture firm RMJM has left behind the troubled waters of realising the Scottish Parliament and is set to create a “Glaswegian Venice” in a neglected area north of the city. It is part of a UK-wide project to give new life to defunct stretches of river and canal land, called ISIS Waterside Regeneration. The partnership between British Waterways, the developers Amec and Igloo Regeneration Fund has been joined by around £2m in investment from Glasgow City Council. Instead of stretches of wasteland and disused waterways in the area, adjacent to Sighthill, the new development will reconnect the old canalway to the Lowland Canals network. A £5.5m development led by British Waterways will create two new locks, a basin, and tree-lined footpaths; in the midst of this will be a gleaming, modern complex of 80 apartments with views across the city.
