Transport museum plan needs a lift

The Scotsman

What is it about the words "controversial international architect" and "£40 million price tag" that inspire instant dismay? I'm sorry to dampen various editorial jubilations about the choice of Zaha Hadid as architect to the new Glasgow Museum of Transport, but the above guff is now run-of-the-mill in former centres of European industry, still transfixed by the idea that Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum turned Bilbao into a cultural gold mine. This puts my head on the block as I'm one of the GMT's historical advisers - a role whose impact to date seems like that of the Oxford don who was consultant to a Hollywood epic. Advising his producer that the vestal virgins were six chaste middle-aged ladies, he got the reply: "I want 50 virgins, and I want them NAKED!"
