Museum all set to enter a new era

Edinburgh Evening News

The Royal Museum is to undergo a £70 million overhaul to modernise it and create two new entrances on Chambers Street. The walls of the Victorian building will be breached at either side of the grand steps to create direct access for visitors to its basement. The dramatic change is part of a plan unveiled today to open up more of the museum to visitors and ensure it remains a crowd-puller way into the 21st Century. Once work is complete, visitors will walk into a new entrance area boasting a cafe, gift shop, cloakroom and education facilities. Lifts and escalators will then carry visitors from the refurbished vaults up to the museum's revamped main hall.
