Fears over Cardross scheme

Building Design

Heritage campaigners have slammed a plan to build new homes in the grounds of one of Scotland's most celebrated post-war buildings. The Twentieth Century Society and the St Peters Building Preservation Trust are deeply concerned about an “incomplete and in some respects ill-considered” scheme to try to arrest the decline of Gillespie, Kidd & Coia's grade A listed Cardross seminary. The seminary has stood derelict since 1980 and is now a burnt-out skeleton. The new plans involve selling off 12ha of the estate, with planning permission for 28 homes designed by ARM Architects. The £2.5 million raised would be used to strip back the seminary and create a dowry to help arrest the decline of the modernist gem.
