A new centre for design, architecture and urban living could breathe fresh life into a gap site in Edinburgh's Old Town. The proposed facility, to promote excellence in planning for Scottish cities, would also safeguard one of the capital's most popular views - from the Royal Mile across the Waverley valley to Calton Hill. City of Edinburgh Council has had informal talks with architects about a new research centre that would take the lead from the city's new design champion, Sir Terry Farrell. The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS), currently looking for a new headquarters in the city, has proposed a shared building on the site, which is owned by arms-length council development firm, EDI Group.
