A teardrop shaped "island" featuring a 30-storey hotel is set to be created in the Firth of Forth. The nine-acre piece of land, which would be connected to the mainland by a causeway, would be the jewel in the crown of a multi-million-pound vision drawn up for Edinburgh's waterfront. The masterplan, unveiled today by the architects behind London's famous "Gherkin" building, contains a man-made beach, along with a park, town squares and a high street. It is hoped the development will transform Granton for thousands of new residents. Hundreds of new luxury and affordable flats and offices would also be built.
