On the tip of north-west Skye, overlooking Harris and Benbecula, sits the first completed project of a new architectural practice, Rural Design. Alan Dickson and Gill Smith moved from Glasgow to Skye just more than a year ago to set up their business, and designed the Wooden House as a combined office and home for themselves and their young family. Their decision to relocate was based on a long-standing dream of a rural life. Dickson's previous employment was mainly with large firms, and he wanted to have the time to “design small projects well, rather than worrying about managing teams of staff”.
