The Royal Museum is set for a major overhaul with proposals to create two new entrances at the historic Chambers Street attraction. It is understood the new entrances either side of the museum's grand steps would take visitors into the building's basement vaults, which would be transformed into a shop, cloakroom and cafe. Stairs and escalators would also be built to carry millions of visitors from the refurbished vaults up to the museum's main hall. The massive changes are a key part of a masterplan drawn up by leading architect Gareth Hoskins for the National Museums of Scotland, which is expected to be unveiled in November. It is believed the partition between the main hall and the temporary exhibition space could also be removed with that area refurbished and at least one more level added for visitors.
