Bank's historic HQ starts trip back to the future

The Scotsman

The Bank of Scotland's historic headquarters in Edinburgh will be closed for 18 months from today to allow a multi-million-pound refurbishment to go ahead. The company plans to restore the building on The Mound to its former glory, with a false ceiling being removed to recreate the original Great Hall. Work is due to be completed in spring 2006 to coincide with the building's 200th anniversary. The 130 staff will be based in a temporary office in Morrison Street until the project is completed. A spokesman for the bank said: "All of this is being done on the advice of professors of architectural history. The building will be restored back to the 19th-century look. "
