Treasures to put out the welcome mat

Edinburgh Evening News

Scores of historic buildings across the Capital are set to throw open their doors tomorrow. Members of the public will have a rare opportunity to get inside 68 "treasures" showcasing the city's architectural heritage. Eleven buildings will take part in the Cockburn Association's annual Doors Open Day for the first time, including the Martello Tower at Leith Docks and the former Territorial Army drill hall in Dalmeny Street. The Central Mosque in Potterrow and the Royal College of Surgeons on Nicolson Street will also be open. Constructed in 1809, the Martello Tower was one of a number of ringed forts built around Britain to defend it against possible Napoleonic invasions. It was used during the Second World War as a munitions dump.
