City top of the blocks for design

Edinburgh Evening News

A clutch of the Capital's newest buildings are leading the way in a "snapshot" of Scotland's finest modern architecture. Twenty-seven buildings completed in Edinburgh in the past 18 months feature in Prospect magazine's Scottish Architectural Annual - nearly a third of the 86 entries contained in the survey. The new Scottish Gas headquarters in Granton and flats in Tron Square just off the Cowgate are among the buildings highlighted by Prospect. Edinburgh University's new Chancellor's Court Halls of Residence beside the Royal Commonwealth Pool and Holyrood Park House office block in Holyrood Road also feature. But one of the most controversial additions is the £11 million Ronaldson's Wharf luxury flats scheme in Leith, which was branded an "architectural time bomb" by local residents before alterations were made by the developer.
