Ranging from a rural home to an arts venue, a school campus to a respite centre for cancer sufferers, the shortlist for Scotland's building of the year has been announced. The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS), selected buildings which were completed before 31 May this year, ruling out any competition debate on the merit of the nation's most controversial project, the £431 million parliament at Holyrood. But while the fallout over the cost and architectural merit of the debating chamber and upturned boats continues unabated, architects insist this year's shortlist reveals that small-scale - and relatively cheap - projects provide much to be proud of.
