A controversial bid to create a multi-million-pound cinema complex in the city centre could be thwarted by plans for a pedestrian crossing next to the proposed site. New walkways are expected to be created on either side of Lothian Road for the continental-style pedestrian crossing. Traffic would be halted outwith the stretch of road between the Usher Hall and Sheraton Grand Hotel which is to be completely upgraded to tie in with the completion of a major revamp of the flagship concert hall. The crossing is expected to run the entire length of Festival Square, which is earmarked for the futuristic cinema complex. Around £2 million of landscaping improvements are to be carried out around the Usher Hall after the expected completion of an £11.85m refurbishment of the venue in 2008.
