Cinema-goers in Scotland had a surprise this week. A state-of-the-art film building, one of the most ambitious of its kind anywhere in the world, is to be constructed in the capital. The project was announced on Tuesday. By Wednesday the newspapers were full of artist's impressions and intriguing descriptions of an elliptical object-building with six flexible cinemas, a roof garden, education, curriculum development and production spaces, a whole suite dedicated to the Edinburgh International Film Festival, and splendid views of Edinburgh castle.
