A 1950s house designed by a world-famous architect has been bulldozed in Edinburgh just as it was set to be protected by heritage watchdogs. The villa in Cramond was knocked down just days before a Historic Scotland inspector was due to visit with a view to awarding listed building status. Conservationists were keen to see the two-storey house protected because it was designed by Sir Basil Spence. The Edinburgh-based architect was responsible for landmark buildings around the world, including the strikingly modern Coventry Cathedral. But the city council gave permission for it to be demolished after deciding it was not worth saving.
