Planners back gap site vision despite protest

Edinburgh Evening News

A controversial shopping arcade and office block earmarked for the city centre has won the backing of planners despite a storm of protest. The six-storey building would transform a prominent gap site at Haymarket into a bustling new business and leisure centre. Heritage watchdogs Historic Scotland, the Cockburn Association and the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust are among a raft of groups who have objected to the multi-million pound scheme. But city officials have recommended the development, spearheaded by the council's own arms-length company EDI, be given the go-ahead at a planning committee meeting on Wednesday.
