Lighthouse the beacon push for praise of Scots designers

The Scotsman

From carbuncle to a shining beacon for the promotion of state-of-the-art architecture and design, Glasgow's Lighthouse building has come a long way in five years. Yesterday saw the start of the fifth birthday celebrations for Scotland's national centre for architecture, design and the city, with the announcement that The Lighthouse would be leading the push for increased international recognition for the quality and diversity of Scottish design talent. Showcase events have been planned for Venice, Utrecht, Marseilles and Brussels. Described as Glasgow's equivalent to London's ill-fated Dome following a fanfare opening in 1999, the centre took a proverbial panning just over a year later when it became technically insolvent as a result of high running costs and exhibition expenses.
