It is the original building of the old Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where the children of city merchants were taught. The 18th century George Watson's Hospital wing had been facing the wrecking ball under the £400 million Quartermile redevelopment of the site. But now talks are under way between developers and one of Scotland's leading conservation architects to save the building - by carefully dismantling it brick by brick and resurrecting it four miles away at George Watson's College, in Colinton Road. Backers of the ambitious scheme estimate it could cost as much as £20,000 to dismantle the building, but it is unclear who will pay for the project. The mammoth task, spearheaded by city conservation architects Simpson & Brown, would mark a new dawn for the historic building, which until now was to be completely destroyed.
