Top design award for Maggie's care centre

The Herald

A cancer care centre in Scotland which was designed by Frank Gehry, one of the world's leading architects, has been named building of the year. The Los Angeles-based architect is famous for some of the finest contemporary buildings, including the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. The Maggie's Cancer Care Centre in Dundee, Gehry's winning creation which was honoured at an award ceremony in London, is said to have been designed to react against the institutional environment of hospitals. The building, visited by about 40 cancer patients daily, has the architect's signature metal roof, in stainless steel, and focuses around a small tower. The chain of Maggie's Centres are named after and inspired by Maggie Keswick Jencks, who died from cancer in 1995.
