Designers unveil plan for way down to Waverley

The Scotsman

Architects are to create a landmark gateway to Edinburgh's main railway station as part of the first phase of its redevelopment. Escalators and lifts from Princes Street will act as a "beacon" to Waverley station, according to consultants devising a plan for the work. The consultants said the improved links, across half the width of Waverley Steps, would be "architect-led" and provide a "design statement" reflecting its importance as a gateway to the station. The two banks of covered escalators will form part of a £150 million initial expansion of the station, which also includes two new platforms to accommodate more trains.
