French port has designs on Rennie Mackintosh

Scotland on Sunday

It is a small French port that provided solace and sunshine for one of Scotland's greatest architects and designers during the last few years of his life. At the time, few locals paid much attention to Charles Rennie Mackintosh who, in failing health and fortunes, would arrive on the picturesque Mediterranean waterfront of Port Vendres to paint the captivating views. Now the town in southwest France, about 10 miles from the Spanish border, has taken Mackintosh, the art nouveau genius who lived there for five years in the 1920s, to its heart in a bid to attract tourists.
