Bid to save Holyrood cash 'refused'

Edinburgh Evening News

Holyrood architect Enric Miralles turned down proposals to save money by simplifying the shapes he used in the design of the new Scottish Parliament. The irregular windows, walls and rooflights in the building have helped fuel the cost rises. And structural engineer David Lewis told the Fraser Inquiry how his company, Ove Arup, had suggested making some of the complex shapes slightly more regular in a bid to save cash. But Mr Miralles was determined to stick to his unique designs. Mr Lewis described the elaborate parliament chamber as "the most complicated building I have ever worked on".
