Plans to demolish the George Watson's Hospital building, the last example of William Adam architecture in Edinburgh, have been described as being on a par with "the worst heritage crimes of the 1960s". Conservationists have hit out at the Scottish Executive and developers over the demolition of the building on the old Royal Infirmary site as part of the £400 million Quartermile project to redevelop the area. Six campaigners - all of them teachers at George Watson's College - have contacted The Scotsman to protest at the manner in which planning consent was given to the developers, Quartermile Edinburgh, to demolish the hospital.
