These low-cost houses, designed for windswept, isolated areas, combine traditional appearance with stylish interiors. The Isle of Skye is not readily associated with the latest in design concepts, but the house recently built by Jamie and Margaret Pyper is a striking exception. The Pypers' single-storey home, based on the traditional long house, has a white render with a sloping slate roof and blends easily into the landscape. But the real surprise comes with the contemporary interior - an open-plan kitchen, living area and dining-room, as well as extensive maple flooring.
