US money helps save Greyfriars monument

Edinburgh Evening News

An American foundation has stepped in to provide vital cash to save one of Greyfriars Kirkyard's most famous monuments. The Samuel H Kress Foundation, based in New York, handed over a £5500 grant to allow urgent repairs to be carried out to the Thomas Ballantyne monument. The Greyfriars Kirkyard Trust described the grant as "a real coup" which will allow them to save the damaged 17th-century monument. The work is part of a £1 million scheme which aims to restore 830 monuments on the site over the next three to five years.
