Man with designs on the capital

The Scotsman

A world-renowned architect yesterday began his new role as Edinburgh's "design champion" by calling for a rethink of the city's streetscape. Sir Terry Farrell, who designed the MI6 headquarters in London, as well as the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, said some of the capital's streets were cluttered by unnecessary signs and unfriendly for pedestrians. He was speaking at the official announcement of his appointment as Edinburgh's design tsar, as revealed in The Scotsman last month. Sir Terry, 65, will be an honorary figurehead for future development and design in the city - the first appointment of its kind in Britain.
