One of the world's leading architects is set to be appointed as a new "design champion" for Edinburgh, in a bid to raise the standard of public space and future development in the capital, The Scotsman has learned. Sir Terry Farrell, whose award-winning buildings include the MI6 headquarters in London, is understood to have been chosen as the figurehead for the city's attempts to improve new architecture as rapid economic growth prompts new building projects. A top-ranking full-time "design leader" is also to be appointed to work with Sir Terry as part of a new plan by City of Edinburgh Council.
